The Netherlands has a unique payment landscape that differs significantly from other European markets. Understanding Dutch payment preferences is critical for maximizing conversion rates. iDEAL: The essential payment method
iDEAL was introduced in 2005 by Currence, an organization backed by Dutch banks. It works by redirecting customers to their own bank's online environment to authorize a payment. The funds are transferred instantly, and merchants receive a guaranteed payment notification. Key benefits for sellers include: no chargebacks (unlike credit cards), very low transaction fees (typically โฌ0.29-โฌ0.79 per transaction), instant confirmation, and extremely high consumer trust. Not offering iDEAL in the Netherlands is equivalent to not accepting cash โ it will dramatically hurt your conversion rate.
Payment Service Providers (PSPs)
To accept Dutch payments, you need a PSP that supports iDEAL and other local methods.
