Bizum and Payment Methods in Spanish E-Commerce

Published on: 2025-06-12

Spanish consumers have distinct payment preferences that every e-commerce seller must understand. Unlike other European markets where bank transfers or digital wallets dominate, Spain has its own payment ecosystem where Bizum, cards and buy-now-pay-later solutions play leading roles in shaping conversion rates and customer satisfaction.

Credit and debit cards

Visa and Mastercard remain the most used payment method in Spanish e-commerce, accounting for over 60 percent of online transactions. Redsys is Spain's reference payment gateway, processing more than 90 percent of the country's card transactions. Strong Customer Authentication under PSD2 is mandatory, requiring 3D Secure 2.0 implementation on all transactions. Debit cards have gained ground over credit cards, now representing 45 percent of card payments. For sellers, ensuring a smooth 3DS2 flow is critical to avoid cart abandonment during the authentication step.

Bizum: Spain's payment phenomenon

Bizum has surpassed 25 million users in Spain, representing more than half the adult population. Originally designed for peer-to-peer transfers, Bizum has integrated into e-commerce with a payment flow that only requires the phone number and confirmation in the banking app. Conversion rates with Bizum are higher than cards because it eliminates the friction of entering card details. For online stores, integrating Bizum through Redsys or compatible gateways is practically mandatory in the Spanish market. The service is free for consumers and charges merchants a small transaction fee comparable to card processing.

Buy Now Pay Later: Sequra and competitors

BNPL has experienced 40 percent annual growth in Spain. Sequra is the Spanish market leader, offering payment in 3, 6 or 12 interest-free installments for the buyer. The seller receives the full amount immediately while Sequra assumes the default risk. Industry data shows that offering BNPL increases average order value by 20 to 40 percent and reduces cart abandonment by 30 percent. Klarna and Scalapay also operate in Spain but with lower penetration than Sequra. For products priced above 50 euros, BNPL can be a decisive conversion factor.

PayPal and digital wallets

PayPal is used by approximately 20 percent of Spanish online shoppers, particularly for international purchases where buyer protection adds confidence. Apple Pay and Google Pay are growing in the mobile segment, which now represents over 55 percent of e-commerce traffic in Spain. Amazon Pay allows users to pay with their Amazon account on external stores, reducing friction for the large base of Amazon customers.

Optimal payment configuration

Zunapro recommends offering at minimum cards, Bizum and a BNPL option. This combination covers over 90 percent of Spanish consumer preferences and maximizes conversion rates across all device types and purchase values.
