However big the marketplaces, every brand that wants brand equity in Germany eventually needs its own onlineshop. Doing this in Germany is materially different from running a US Shopify store: you need Klarna Rechnungskauf, a proper DSGVO/TTDSG consent layer, VerpackG/LUCID packaging registration and the trust-mark ecosystem (Trusted Shops, TÜV) that German consumers depend on. This article walks through every one of those layers.
Shopware is Germany's home-grown commerce platform and is the closest match to the DSGVO/IHK/VerpackG world out of the box. Shopify shines on speed and operational simplicity but needs add-ons to reach German legal parity. JTL-Shop is the workhorse of Mittelstand B2B/B2C operations thanks to its tight Wawi (warehouse) integration. For brands under €200k annual GMV, Shopify Plus with Germany-localised plugins is usually the fastest path. From €500k+ multi-country operations, Shopware 6 with its B2B Suite and DACH partner ecosystem becomes the stronger long-term bet.
| Criterion | Shopify Plus | Shopware 6 | JTL-Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | $2,000-2,400 | €600-1,200 | €79-299 |

Credit cards drive 70%+ of US e-commerce but only roughly 30% in Germany. German shoppers prefer Klarna Rechnungskauf (buy now, pay by invoice 14 days later), SEPA Lastschrift direct debit, PayPal and giropay (PSD2 instant SEPA from a savings bank). Apple Pay and Google Pay are growing but remain secondary.
Important: with Klarna Rechnungskauf, Klarna pays you and assumes the consumer credit risk — but charges around 2.49% + €0.35. Don't treat the German market like a Turkish one with deferred merchant settlement; Klarna funds you within 14 days regardless of when the consumer settles.
Under DSGVO + BDSG + TTDSG, the cookie banner must give "Accept all" and "Reject all" buttons with visually equal weight. "Manage settings" cannot be a discreet text link in a corner. Use a CMP that has German-court-tested wording — Usercentrics, CookieBot or Cookie First are the safe choices.
Every seller shipping into Germany must register at the Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister (LUCID) under the Verpackungsgesetz (VerpackG). You report annual tonnage by material (cardboard, plastic, paper, filler) and pay licence fees to a dual-system operator (Der Grüne Punkt, Reclay, Interseroh+). A typical 50 g carton with 20 g paper filler costs €0.30-0.80 per shipment in EPR fees annually.
Germans rarely buy from a store without a Trusted Shops or TÜV-zertifiziert mark. Trusted Shops membership starts at €1,188/year, includes audit of your AGB and Widerrufsbelehrung, plus Käuferschutz buyer-protection insurance up to €500 per transaction. A/B tests across Germany consistently show conversion lifts between 12% and 23%.
Section 5 of the Telemediengesetz (TMG) requires every commercial site to display an Impressum with full company name, HRB number, USt-IdNr and managing director. AGB (Terms) must follow consumer-protection case law; generic templates trigger Abmahnung warning letters. The safest route is to subscribe to IT-Recht-Kanzlei, Trusted Shops Legal or Händlerbund and receive dynamically updated AGB and Widerrufsbelehrung texts.
German consumers bail when mobile page load exceeds 2.4 seconds. Shopify's CDN or Shopware Cloud's Hetzner Frankfurt POP gives you a solid foundation; WebP imagery and a headless front-end (Vendure/Hydrogen) push Lighthouse over 90. ZunaPro runs the entire stack from Frankfurt am Main and bundles DHL Geschäftskundenkonto, Hermes API and DPD ePOD connectivity in a single integration.
