Amazon.de E-Commerce Snapshot 2026 — Quick Read

Germany is Europe's largest e-commerce market and Amazon.de is its undisputed centre of gravity: roughly €32B+ in 2026 GMV, 60M+ active shoppers, 17M+ Prime members and an estimated 230,000 active third-party sellers. The fulfillment backbone is anchored by the historic Bad Hersfeld hub plus a dozen FCs spread across Werne, Rheinberg, Pforzheim, Winsen, Brieselang, Dortmund and others. Last-mile is split between AMZL (Amazon Logistics), DHL, Hermes, DPD and GLS. Key 2026 changes: E-Rechnung (XRechnung 3.0 / ZUGFeRD 2.3) B2B-receipt obligations are in force since 1 January 2026, with mandatory issuance phased in from 2027–2028. VAT (USt) remains 19% standard / 7% reduced; Verpackungsgesetz LUCID, ElektroG WEEE and BattG registrations are enforced via Amazon listing suppression.

1. Amazon.de Seller Account Types — Individual vs Professional

Two Plans, One Strategic Choice

Every Amazon.de seller has to pick one of two account types when registering. The choice looks cosmetic — but it gates the most valuable features on the platform, including the Buy Box, Sponsored Products advertising and bulk listing tools.

Individual Seller (Einzelanbieter)

€0.99 per item sold, no monthly subscription, hard cap of 40 items/month, no Buy Box eligibility, no advertising access (Sponsored Products / Brands / Display all require Professional), no bulk feed uploads, no SP-API inventory access. Individual is designed for occasional sellers liquidating personal inventory — not for B2B SaaS-orchestrated commerce.

Professional Seller (Profi-Verkäufer)

€39 / month flat (excluding VAT), no per-item fee on top of referral commissions. Unlimited listings, Buy Box eligibility, full advertising access (Sponsored Products / Brands / Display / Amazon DSP), bulk tools (flat-file uploads + SP-API + third-party ecosystem: Helium 10, Jungle Scout, Sellics, Zunapro), Brand Registry eligibility (required for A+ Content and Amazon Stores), and Inventory Placement plus Pan-EU FBA enrolment.

The Practical Recommendation

For any seller projecting more than ~40 monthly sales — or planning to use FBA, run ads, sell B2B via Amazon Business, or scale across EU marketplaces — Professional is the only sensible choice. The €39 monthly fee breaks even on roughly two saved €0.99 per-item charges per day; everything beyond that is upside. Zunapro's Amazon.de connector requires Professional seller status because the SP-API authorizations Individual accounts can grant are too restrictive for inventory sync.

💡

Pro tip: If you start as Individual to test the waters, your selling history and feedback transfer to a Professional account when you upgrade. Amazon does not retain Buy Box history from the Individual period, however — your Buy Box eligibility clock resets on the upgrade date.

2. Account Setup Step by Step — Documents, Verification, Bank

Pre-Registration Checklist

Amazon.de Seller Central registration tightened significantly since 2022 under the EU Digital Services Act "Know Your Business Customer" rules. Have ready before starting: government ID (Personalausweis / EU passport / non-EU passport for the legal representative); business registration (Gewerbeanmeldung or Handelsregisterauszug for GmbH/UG; foreign trade register extract translated to DE/EN); USt-IdNr. (or EU VAT + OSS — but USt-IdNr. is required for FBA); bank account (German IBAN fastest; SEPA-EU accepted; non-EU sellers use Payoneer / WorldFirst / Wise multi-currency); credit card (international Visa/Mastercard for monthly billing); phone number reachable during the video call; proof of address (utility bill, bank statement or Meldebescheinigung within 90 days).

Step 1 — Choose Marketplace and Plan

Start at sellercentral.amazon.de. The wizard asks which EU marketplaces you intend to sell on — pick at minimum Amazon.de; you can add FR/IT/ES/NL/PL/SE/BE/IE later under one Unified European Account. Then choose Professional (as discussed above).

Enter your business type (sole trader / GmbH / UG / foreign corporation), legal entity name, registered address, and a "doing business as" (DBA) trade name if applicable. The legal entity name must match your trade register entry exactly, including suffixes like "GmbH" or "Ltd." Amazon cross-checks against German official registries automatically.

Step 3 — Tax Identity & Marketplace Tax Certificate

Provide your USt-IdNr. Amazon validates it against the EU VIES database in real time. Non-EU sellers also upload a Bescheinigung nach §22f UStG (marketplace tax certificate) issued by the German tax office — without it, Amazon is liable for unpaid VAT on your behalf and will block your listings within days of registration.

Step 4 — Bank & Credit Card Verification

Amazon issues a small test transaction (typically €0.01) to your IBAN and asks you to confirm the descriptor. The credit card is authorisation-charged for €1 and reversed. Both must succeed before the account moves to verification.

Step 5 — Identity Verification (Video Call)

Since 2022 Amazon requires a real-time video call with the legal representative. The call lasts 10–20 minutes; you hold up your ID document and an Amazon agent confirms it visually against your face, then asks two or three open-ended questions about your business model. Schedule blocks are available in German, English, French and Spanish.

Step 6 — Account Health Baseline

Once approved, Amazon establishes a baseline Account Health Rating (AHR). Headline thresholds: Order Defect Rate <1%, Late Shipment Rate <4% (FBM only), Valid Tracking Rate >95%, Cancellation Rate <2.5%. Zero tolerance for IP, restricted-product or DSGVO policy violations.

3. FBA Germany Logistics — Bad Hersfeld & the Fulfillment Centre Network

What FBA Means in Germany

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) means you ship inventory in bulk to Amazon's German fulfillment centres; Amazon stores it, picks and packs every order, handles last-mile delivery via AMZL / DHL / Hermes / DPD / GLS, deals with customer service in German, and processes returns. In exchange you pay (a) fulfillment fees by size/weight tier and (b) monthly storage fees per cubic metre. FBA listings automatically earn the Prime badge — the single most important conversion driver on Amazon.de.

The Fulfillment Centre Map — Bad Hersfeld and Beyond

Amazon operates a dozen-plus FCs in Germany in 2026, totalling roughly 1.5 million m² of active fulfillment space. The historic anchor is FRA1 — Bad Hersfeld (Hessen), opened 1999 as Amazon's first German FC and now a multi-building campus. Other major sites: FRA3 — Werne (NRW, 2010, Ruhr), DUS2 — Rheinberg (NRW, 2011, sortation), STR1 / STR8 — Pforzheim & Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg), HAM2 — Winsen (Niedersachsen, Hamburg), BER3 — Brieselang (Brandenburg, Berlin), DTM1 — Dortmund (NRW, oversized), LEJ1 — Leipzig (Sachsen), MUC3 — Graben (Bayern, Munich), FRA7 — Frankenthal (Rheinland-Pfalz). Sellers do not choose the FC; Amazon's Inventory Placement Service routes inbound stock based on capacity, destination density and SKU velocity.

Inbound & Prep

Creating an FBA shipment in Seller Central produces a Shipment ID, FBA-prefixed labels per SKU box, and a designated FC destination. Hand cartons to DHL Business Customer, UPS, DPD or a dedicated FBA freight provider (Saloodo, Sennder, amzaff for pallets); Amazon's Partnered Carrier Programme offers DHL Freight at 20–35% below retail. Items must arrive labelled (FNSKU or scannable UPC/EAN), poly-bagged for soft goods and sealed for multi-packs. Amazon's FBA Prep Service handles all of it at €0.30–€1.20/unit; third-party prep centres in Berlin, Hamburg or Leipzig run 30–50% cheaper, which is usually the right choice for Chinese-origin container loads.

FBA Fulfillment & Storage Fees 2026

Fulfillment fees are bundled per unit by size/weight tier; storage fees are monthly per cubic metre. The 2026 schedule (excluding VAT):

  • Small Standard (≤ 250 g, ≤ 35×25×12 cm): €2.70 – €3.20 per unit
  • Standard Parcel (≤ 12 kg, ≤ 60×40×30 cm): €3.40 – €4.20 per unit
  • Small Oversize (≤ 25 kg): €5.50 – €7.20 per unit
  • Large Oversize (≤ 50 kg): €9.00 – €14.50 per unit
  • Monthly storage (Jan – Sep): ~€26 per m³
  • Monthly storage (Oct – Dec, peak): ~€36 per m³
  • Long-term storage: surcharge after 271 days, escalating after 365 days

4. Pan-EU FBA Strategy — Single Inventory, Five EU Markets

Three Cross-Border Fulfillment Models

Amazon offers three fulfillment topologies for cross-border EU sales. Choosing the right one is the single most important strategic decision after picking Professional Seller plan.

  • EFN (European Fulfilment Network) — keep stock in one country (typically Germany), ship cross-border from there. Cheap to set up (one VAT registration), but Amazon charges a per-unit cross-border fee that erodes margin, and delivery promises lengthen to 3–5 days.
  • MCI (Multi-Country Inventory) — you manually decide how to split stock across countries. Domestic Prime speed everywhere you place stock; full VAT registration in each holding country. Operationally heavier than Pan-EU.
  • Pan-EU FBA — Amazon's algorithm decides how to distribute your stock across DE/FR/IT/ES/PL/CZ. Domestic Prime speed in all five marketplaces, no cross-border surcharge. Requires VAT registration in every country where stock is held.

Why Pan-EU FBA Usually Wins Above ~€200K Cross-Border GMV

The Pan-EU FBA fee is identical to local-market FBA fees — no cross-border premium. EFN cross-border fees range from €1.20 to €5+ per unit depending on size; on a typical fashion or home SKU that wipes out the entire incremental margin from going cross-border. Above roughly €200K cross-border GMV, the saving on EFN surcharges more than pays for the additional VAT registrations and OSS filings.

Pan-EU FBA Country Set 2026

  • Germany (amazon.de) — the largest market and Pan-EU spine
  • France (amazon.fr)
  • Italy (amazon.it)
  • Spain (amazon.es)
  • Poland (amazon.pl) — added to Pan-EU 2021 alongside the .pl launch
  • Czechia (amazon.cz) — Pan-EU eligible since 2022

Sweden (amazon.se), Netherlands (amazon.nl) and Belgium (amazon.com.be) are reachable via EFN from Germany but are not currently part of the Pan-EU automatic-distribution programme.

VAT Compliance — VCS, OSS, or a Specialist

Holding inventory in six countries triggers six VAT registrations. Three practical paths: Amazon VCS computes VAT on every order line and provides transaction reports (calculation layer only — you still need a tax representative per country). OSS files cross-border B2C VAT through a single quarterly home-country return — but only where stock isn't held locally, so Pan-EU FBA still needs country VAT IDs. Specialist providers — hellotax, Taxually, Amavat, Avalara TrustFile EU — bundle registrations, filings and Intrastat across all six markets for €100–€250 / country / month.

🧮

Cross-border math: For sellers under €200K cross-border GMV, EFN + OSS is the cheaper path. Above €200K, Pan-EU FBA + six VAT registrations starts to pay back within a quarter. Zunapro's cross-border calculator runs both scenarios on your real ASIN data. Run the comparison →

5. German VAT Registration — USt-IdNr., OSS & Amazon VCS

Umsatzsteuer (USt) — The German VAT System

German VAT is called Umsatzsteuer (USt), sometimes written as Mehrwertsteuer (MwSt) in consumer-facing copy. The two rates are:

  • Standard rate 19% — applies to almost all marketplace categories: electronics, fashion, home, beauty, toys
  • Reduced rate 7% — books, food, periodicals, certain medical goods, cultural goods, plants

The agency administering German VAT is the Finanzamt (local tax office) for resident sellers and the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern (BZSt) for non-resident sellers. The German VAT ID is the USt-IdNr., format DE + 9 digits.

When Registration Is Mandatory

Resident German sellers register from the first euro of taxable turnover (the Kleinunternehmer exemption under €22K is rarely usable for FBA because Amazon requires a USt-IdNr.). EU cross-border sellers register once they hold stock in Germany (any FBA seller) or exceed the €10K EU-wide B2C distance-sales threshold. Non-EU sellers register from the first sale and must appoint a fiscal representative under §22a UStG. Resident sellers apply via local Finanzamt through ELSTER (the Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung); non-residents apply to a central Finanzamt (Berlin-Neukölln, Hamburg, Bonn-Innenstadt, Kassel-Hofgeismar, Oranienburg by home country). Issuance takes 4–8 weeks for residents, 6–12 weeks for non-residents.

OSS & Amazon VCS — The Calculation Stack

OSS (One Stop Shop) lets you file cross-border EU B2C VAT through a single quarterly return in your home country. The threshold is €10K EU-wide B2C distance sales/year; above that, you charge destination-country VAT rates. OSS does not cover stock-holding — for Pan-EU FBA you still need country VAT IDs for every FC country. Amazon VCS (VAT Calculation Service) is the free tool that computes VAT per order line based on customer destination and tax classification, generates an invoice and provides monthly transaction reports. VCS handles calculation only — filings still go via your tax team, specialist provider, or Zunapro's compliance module.

UStVA — Monthly German VAT Returns

Umsatzsteuer-Voranmeldung (UStVA) is the monthly (or quarterly for small sellers) VAT pre-declaration filed via ELSTER by the 10th of the following month (extendable with a Dauerfristverlängerung). Marketplace turnover from VCS plus own-webshop revenue must be aggregated and split by 19% / 7% / 0% / reverse-charge.

🧾 Automate German VAT with Zunapro

Pulls VCS data via SP-API, splits by 19/7%, reconciles with own-shop revenue, and exports a UStVA-ready file to ELSTER. Pan-EU FBA-aware across DE/FR/IT/ES/PL/CZ.

6. E-Rechnung Compliance 2026 — XRechnung & ZUGFeRD Mandatory B2B

What Changed in January 2026

The German Wachstumschancengesetz (Growth Opportunities Act) enacted in March 2024 introduced mandatory electronic structured invoicing (E-Rechnung) for all domestic B2B transactions. The phased rollout:

  • 1 January 2026 — every German business must be able to receive structured E-Rechnungen. Paper or unstructured PDF B2B invoices may still be issued until end of 2026.
  • 1 January 2027 — businesses with annual turnover > €800K must issue structured E-Rechnungen for all B2B transactions.
  • 1 January 2028 — all German B2B issuance becomes mandatory regardless of turnover.

B2C (consumer) invoices remain unaffected — Amazon's standard customer invoice continues to suffice. But for Amazon Business (the B2B marketplace) and any direct B2B sale, E-Rechnung is the compliance frontier of 2026.

The Two Allowed Formats — XRechnung vs ZUGFeRD

German law recognises two structured formats:

  • XRechnung — pure XML, defined by KoSIT (Koordinierungsstelle für IT-Standards). Current version XRechnung 3.0. Required format for public-sector invoicing (B2G) since 2020; widely supported by B2B procurement systems.
  • ZUGFeRD — hybrid PDF/A-3 with an embedded XML payload. Current version ZUGFeRD 2.3. Visually readable PDF for humans, machine-readable XML for ERPs. Popular with mid-market sellers who want a fallback visible invoice.

Both meet the EN 16931 European semantic data model. Amazon Business customers can specify which format they prefer; the safe default is ZUGFeRD 2.3 (PDF + XML in one file), which renders correctly in every customer's PDF reader.

What an E-Rechnung Must Contain

  • Seller and buyer VAT IDs (Leitweg-ID for B2G)
  • Structured invoice line items with tax codes
  • Calculation breakdown by VAT rate (19% / 7% / 0% / reverse-charge)
  • Reference to order number, delivery date, payment terms
  • EN 16931–compliant XML payload

Practical Issuance Stack

Three practical paths: built-in ERP (DATEV, SAP, Lexware, Sage, sevDesk all support XRechnung / ZUGFeRD natively); marketplace tool (Zunapro auto-generates XRechnung 3.0 / ZUGFeRD 2.3 the moment a B2B order arrives via SP-API, attaches it to the Amazon Business order detail and routes by Leitweg-ID); or standalone E-Rechnung service (Crossinx, easybill, Lexoffice, DocBee — cheap but require integration glue with Amazon).

⚖️

Compliance is not optional in 2026. Receipt-side E-Rechnung is already mandatory since 1 January 2026. Issuance becomes mandatory in 2027/2028. Amazon Business customers already expect it. See Zunapro's E-Rechnung module →

7. Buy Box & Repricer — Winning the Featured Offer

How the Buy Box Works

The Buy Box (officially the Featured Offer) is the right-hand panel on every Amazon.de product page that contains the default In den Einkaufswagen button. Roughly 82–88% of unit sales on any given ASIN flow through the Buy Box. The remainder come from "Other Sellers" links and direct seller storefront traffic. Winning it is the single highest-leverage activity on Amazon.

The Algorithm — What Amazon Looks At

The Buy Box algorithm weighs landed price (item + shipping), fulfillment method (FBA outranks FBM at equal price; Seller-Fulfilled Prime sits between), Account Health Rating (ODR, late shipment rate, valid tracking rate, cancellation rate), shipping speed (same-day > next-day > two-day), seller feedback (95%+ is the practical threshold), customer-service responsiveness (<24h on buyer messages), and inventory depth. Eligibility means Amazon includes you in the algorithm at all (Professional Seller, healthy AHR, no suspensions); winning means the algorithm selects you on a specific page view. Healthy ASINs run 80–95% Buy Box win rate, tracked in Seller Central under Buy Box-Prozentsatz.

Repricer Strategy — Why Manual Doesn't Scale

The Buy Box algorithm re-evaluates roughly every 15 minutes; competitors run automated repricers. A manual seller with one daily price update loses the Buy Box ~95% of the time at the same floor. Three main 2026 strategies: rule-based ("undercut lowest FBA offer by €0.01") produces races to the bottom; algorithmic tools (Bqool, RepricerExpress, Aura, Sellersnap) recapture the box without always undercutting; profit-aware (Zunapro) combines algorithmic repricing with live referral fees, FBA fees, VAT and COGS lookups, refusing to drop below net-margin floor even if Buy Box is lost.

🎯 Win the Buy Box without burning margin

Zunapro's profit-aware repricer combines SP-API Buy Box signals with live fee data, VAT splits and COGS — so you stay competitive without racing to the floor.

See Repricer →

8. Brand Registry & A+ Content — Protecting and Premiumising the Listing

What Brand Registry Unlocks

Amazon Brand Registry is a free programme open to sellers who own a registered trademark. On Amazon.de, eligible trademarks include DPMA (Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt) German marks, EUIPO EU trademarks, USPTO US marks, UKIPO UK marks and a list of national offices Amazon publishes. Enrolment unlocks A+ Content (rich descriptions with image modules, comparison tables, brand story, video — typical conversion lift 5–10%), Premium A+ Content, Amazon Stores (free brand mini-site at amazon.de/yourbrand), Sponsored Brands headline-banner ads, Brand Analytics (search-term reports, market-basket analysis), the Vine reviewer programme, hijacker / counterfeit takedown tools plus Project Zero, and the Transparency per-unit QR-code programme.

The Enrolment Process

Apply for the trademark at DPMA (~€290 fee, ~6 months to grant) or EUIPO (~€850 fee, ~4 months). Word marks or design+word marks have higher acceptance rates than pure design marks. Once granted, submit the trademark number to Seller Central Markenregistrierung with ASIN proof; Amazon verifies against the public registry in 2–10 business days, then unlocks A+ Content in the Brand Registry dashboard.

A+ Content Best Practices for German Audiences

Use native German copy, not auto-translation — German shoppers leave reviews citing "schlechtes Deutsch". Build detailed comparison tables (Germans love feature/spec comparisons). Surface trust signals — TÜV, GS, CE marks, warranty terms in plain German. Lean into provenance where authentic ("Manufaktur seit 1923", "Hergestellt in Bayern").

9. Amazon Ads Germany — Sponsored Products, DSP & ACOS Targets

The Ads Stack on Amazon.de

Amazon's German advertising surface mirrors the US/UK stack in EUR with German-language creative requirements. Sponsored Products (SP) — keyword and ASIN-targeted ads in search and product pages — is the workhorse (70–80% of ad spend). Sponsored Brands (SB) places a headline banner above search; Brand Registry required. Sponsored Display (SD) handles retargeting on and off Amazon (Twitch, IMDb). Amazon DSP is programmatic display/video/audio across Amazon-owned and 3P inventory, with ~€10K/month minimum for managed service.

ACOS, TACOS and the German Benchmarks

ACOS = ad spend ÷ ad-attributed revenue; TACOS = ad spend ÷ total revenue. Healthy 2026 benchmarks: launch phase ACOS 50–80%, TACOS 25–35% (goal is rank, not profit); growth phase ACOS 25–40%, TACOS 15–22%; mature ASIN ACOS 12–20%, TACOS 8–12%; category leader TACOS <8%. German searchers compound words (Bluetoothkopfhörerkabellos not "Bluetooth wireless headphones") — keyword tools like Helium 10 Cerebro and DataDive surface the patterns. Brand-defense (bidding on your own brand) typically eats 5–10% of total ad spend.

10. Commission & Fee Structure 2026 — Referral, FBA & Beyond

Referral Fees by Category

Amazon's referral fee is the marketplace commission charged on every sold unit, calculated as a percentage of the item price (item subtotal + shipping in most categories). The 2026 schedule on Amazon.de is identical to the wider EU schedule. Three broad tiers:

Low Band
7% – 10%
Personal Computers, Consumer Electronics (≤€100 item only), large appliances
Mid Band
12% – 15%
Home, kitchen, sports, toys, baby, pet, garden, automotive, books
High Band
15% – 17%
Fashion, shoes, jewellery, watches, beauty, luxury beauty, handbags

Special cases worth noting:

  • Amazon Device Accessories — 45% (yes, forty-five percent — the highest referral on the platform)
  • 3D Printed Products — 12%
  • Furniture > €200 — 10% on portion above €200, 15% below
  • Minimum referral fee — €0.30 per unit regardless of category

FBA Fees Recap

FBA fulfillment fees (covered in Section 3) sit on top of referral fees. For a typical Standard Parcel sized SKU selling for €25 on Amazon.de in the Home category, the full fee stack looks like:

  • Item price: €25.00
  • Referral fee (15%): −€3.75
  • FBA fulfillment fee (Standard Parcel): −€3.80
  • VAT 19%: −€3.99 (charged on €21 net)
  • Storage allocation: −€0.20
  • Net before COGS: €13.26 (~53% of list)

Optional Costs to Budget For

Beyond referral + FBA, budget for: Professional Seller subscription €39/mo, Amazon Ads 8–25% TACOS, FBA prep / labelling €0.30–€1.20/unit, long-term storage surcharge €100–€200/m³/mo after 271 days, removal fees €0.30–€0.60/unit, disposal €0.15/unit, and a refund administration fee of 20% of the referral fee on returned orders.

📋
Live fee schedule: Amazon publishes every fee live in Seller Central. Zunapro pulls them via SP-API and recomputes margins per ASIN every night. See the Amazon.de referral fees reference.

DSGVO (German GDPR)

DSGVO (Datenschutz-Grundverordnung) is the German EU GDPR implementation, enforced by 16 state DPAs plus federal BfDI. Marketplace sellers are joint data controllers with Amazon for shopper data in the order detail. You need a Datenschutzerklärung (privacy policy), an Auftragsverarbeitungsvertrag (AVV) with every processor (Zunapro, repricers, prep centres), an internal Verzeichnis der Verarbeitungstätigkeiten (VVT) register, and a 30-day right-to-be-forgotten workflow.

Widerrufsrecht (14-Day Right of Withdrawal)

EU Directive 2011/83/EU mandates a 14-day right of withdrawal for distance-purchased goods. German consumers may return any Amazon.de order within 14 days, no reason required; Amazon enforces an even more generous 30-day return window on most categories. Custom-made, hygiene-related and digital-content categories are exempt. Sellers must include a Widerrufsbelehrung in the listing — Amazon supplies the standard text by default.

Verpackungsgesetz (LUCID), ElektroG (WEEE) and BattG

Verpackungsgesetz (VerpackG) requires registration in LUCID, the public register operated by ZSVR (Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister), plus a contract with a dual system (Duales System Deutschland / "Der Grüne Punkt", Interseroh+, Reclay, BellandVision, Veolia, Zentek) for packaging volume licensing and annual reporting by material. ElektroG — Germany's WEEE implementation — requires registration with Stiftung EAR and a WEEE-Reg.-Nr. for any electrical equipment. BattG (Batteriegesetz) covers loose and embedded batteries, also via Stiftung EAR with collective-scheme take-back (GRS Batterien, ERP Deutschland). REACH applies to cosmetics, cleaning, plastics, jewellery; CE marking is mandatory for electronics, toys, PPE, medical and machinery. Amazon enforces all three with automatic listing suppression.

⚖️

Amazon enforces compliance with listing suppression. A missing LUCID, EAR or BattG registration silently kills your listings. Zunapro's compliance pre-flight surfaces missing registrations before you upload an ASIN. See compliance pack →

Logistics & Last Mile in Germany — AMZL, DHL, Hermes, DPD, GLS

The Five-Carrier Reality

Amazon.de's last-mile delivery is split across five carriers. AMZL (Amazon Logistics) handles ~40–50% of FBA volume in metro areas (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt) — same-day and next-day Prime relies on AMZL density. DHL Parcel remains the long-time partner for rural delivery and Packstation drop-off (15,000+ lockers). Hermes (Otto Group) is used selectively on price. DPD handles B2B and oversized; GLS is fast-growing in southern Germany. UPS is used mainly for cross-border and heavy B2B.

FBA Shipping Speeds in 2026

  • Same-day Prime — 12 metro areas (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Hannover, Leipzig, Dortmund, Essen)
  • One-day Prime — covers ~70% of German postcodes
  • Two-day Prime — covers virtually all of Germany
  • Pan-EU Prime cross-border — 1–2 days within DE/AT, 2–4 within FR/IT/ES/PL/CZ when stock is locally placed

How to Start Selling on Amazon.de — 2026 Step-by-Step

1. Decision Tree — FBA vs FBM vs Hybrid

  • Standard-sized SKUs, >100 orders/month, want Prime → FBA
  • Oversized / heavy / fragile / low-velocity → FBM, possibly with SFP (Seller-Fulfilled Prime) if you can hit Prime SLAs
  • Mixed catalog → Hybrid: FBA for hero SKUs, FBM for long-tail
  • Pan-EU vision from day one → FBA + Pan-EU enrolment + 6 VAT registrations
  • Cautious cross-border test → FBA Germany + EFN to FR/IT/ES/PL/CZ

Pick your path before you start the Seller Central wizard:

  • German Einzelunternehmen — sole trader, register via Gewerbeanmeldung at your local Bürgeramt (~€20–€60). Fastest path for German residents.
  • German UG (haftungsbeschränkt) or GmbH — limited liability, €1+ minimum capital for UG, €25K for GmbH. Best for sellers committing long-term.
  • Foreign EU entity + USt-IdNr. — keep your existing company, register for German VAT only. Common for Polish, Dutch and Italian sellers.
  • Non-EU entity + tax representative + USt-IdNr. — required path for Turkish, UK, US, Chinese sellers. Marketplace tax certificate under §22f UStG is mandatory.

3. Brand & Trademark Strategy

If you are building a private label, file the trademark before launching listings. A DPMA German trademark filed today costs ~€290 and grants in roughly 6 months; an EUIPO EU trademark costs ~€850 and grants in roughly 4 months. Hijackers move fast on attractive new ASINs — without Brand Registry you cannot defend them.

4. Compliance Registrations

  1. USt-IdNr. — via local Finanzamt (resident) or central Finanzamt (non-resident)
  2. LUCID — register at verpackungsregister.org, sign a dual-system contract
  3. WEEE-Reg.-Nr. via Stiftung EAR for any electrical equipment
  4. BattG registration via Stiftung EAR for batteries
  5. E-Rechnung capability — XRechnung 3.0 / ZUGFeRD 2.3 receipt-side mandatory since 2026
  6. DSGVO documentation — privacy policy, AVV with processors, VVT

5. Connect via Zunapro — 10-Minute Integration

  1. Sign in to Zunapro and open the Germany module
  2. Authorize Amazon SP-API — OAuth flow into the Amazon.de tile
  3. Map your master catalog — Zunapro auto-suggests ASIN matches by EAN/UPC; you confirm with a few clicks
  4. Activate VCS sync + E-Rechnung — single toggle each
  5. Activate FBA inventory sync — Zunapro pulls FC inventory levels every 15 minutes
  6. Add Pan-EU markets — connect amazon.fr / .it / .es / .pl / .cz tiles with the same Unified European Account credentials
  7. Go live — first sync for a 1,000-ASIN catalog completes in roughly 10 minutes

Centralize Amazon.de + Pan-EU in one panel

Amazon.de + amazon.fr + .it + .es + .pl + .cz — one catalog, one inventory pool, E-Rechnung issuance, VCS VAT splits, profit-aware Buy Box repricer. 10-minute integration, real-time FBA stock sync.

Amazon.de Seller FAQ 2026

How much does it cost to sell on Amazon.de in 2026?

Amazon.de has two plans in 2026. Individual costs €0.99 per item sold with no monthly fee but is hard-capped at 40 items/month, has no Buy Box eligibility and no advertising. Professional costs €39 / month flat with unlimited listings, Buy Box eligibility, Sponsored Products / Brands / Display advertising, SP-API access and Brand Registry eligibility.

On top of subscription, every sale incurs a referral fee (typically 8–15%, capped at 45% for Amazon Device Accessories), and FBA users pay additional fulfillment and storage fees. Almost every serious seller goes Professional from day one — the €39 breaks even on roughly two saved €0.99 per-item charges per day.

Do I need a German company to sell on Amazon.de?

No. Amazon.de accepts EU-based sellers and non-EU sellers (Turkish, UK, US, Chinese) with a valid German VAT ID (USt-IdNr.) or EU OSS registration. Non-EU sellers must additionally appoint a German tax representative under §22f UStG and provide a marketplace tax certificate (Bescheinigung über die steuerliche Erfassung) to Amazon via Seller Central.

From 2026, German E-Rechnung B2B-receipt obligations apply regardless of where the seller is established; from 2027–2028 issuance becomes mandatory for German-resident businesses with phased thresholds. Foreign sellers selling to German business customers should treat E-Rechnung as already expected.

What is the difference between FBA and FBM on Amazon.de?

FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) means you ship inventory in bulk to Amazon's German fulfillment centres — Bad Hersfeld (the historic hub), Werne, Rheinberg, Pforzheim, Winsen, Brieselang and others. Amazon handles storage, picking, packing, last-mile delivery via AMZL / DHL / Hermes / DPD / GLS, German-language customer service and returns. FBA listings automatically earn the Prime badge.

FBM (Fulfillment by Merchant) means you ship yourself from your own warehouse. No Prime badge by default — though Seller-Fulfilled Prime (SFP) is available if you can hit Prime SLAs. The 2026 default for sellers above ~100 orders/month is FBA, with selective FBM for oversized or low-velocity SKUs where storage fees would exceed the margin uplift.

What is Pan-EU FBA and is it worth enrolling in 2026?

Pan-EU FBA lets you maintain a single inventory pool that Amazon physically distributes across fulfillment centres in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland and Czechia. Customers in all six marketplaces receive Prime-eligible domestic-speed delivery; you avoid the cross-border surcharge of the EFN (European Fulfilment Network) alternative.

In return, you need VAT registrations in every country where stock is held — typically handled via Amazon's VAT Calculation Service (VCS) for the line-item layer and a specialist provider (hellotax, Taxually, Avalara) for filings. For sellers above ~€200K cross-border GMV, the saved EFN surcharges more than pay for the additional VAT registrations within a quarter. Below that threshold, EFN + OSS is the cheaper path.

What German VAT rates apply on Amazon.de?

Germany has two VAT (Umsatzsteuer) rates: 19% standard on most marketplace categories (electronics, fashion, home, beauty, toys), and 7% reduced on books, food, periodicals, certain medical goods, and a handful of cultural and agricultural goods.

Marketplace sellers must register for a USt-IdNr. once they exceed the €10,000 EU distance-sales threshold or hold inventory in Germany — which all FBA sellers do. Amazon's VAT Calculation Service (VCS) handles per-order VAT calculation automatically; Zunapro reconciles VCS data into your bookkeeping and the monthly UStVA pre-declaration filed via ELSTER.

Is E-Rechnung mandatory for Amazon.de sellers in 2026?

E-Rechnung for B2B transactions became progressively mandatory under the Wachstumschancengesetz: from 1 January 2026, every German business must be able to receive structured E-Rechnungen (XRechnung XML or ZUGFeRD hybrid PDF/A-3+XML). From 1 January 2027, businesses with turnover above €800K must issue E-Rechnungen for all B2B transactions. From 1 January 2028, all German B2B issuance is mandatory.

Amazon Business (Amazon's B2B marketplace) customers already expect XRechnung or ZUGFeRD invoices. Zunapro auto-generates compliant XRechnung 3.0 / ZUGFeRD 2.3 invoices the moment a B2B order is received via SP-API.

How does Amazon's Buy Box work on Amazon.de?

The Buy Box (officially the Featured Offer) is the right-hand panel on every product page that determines which seller wins the default In den Einkaufswagen click. Amazon's algorithm weighs landed price competitiveness, FBA/Prime eligibility, Account Health metrics (ODR, late shipment rate, valid tracking rate), shipping speed and seller feedback.

On Amazon.de, the Buy Box drives roughly 82–88% of unit sales on any given ASIN. Repricers — Zunapro's included — adjust prices every few minutes within seller-defined floor/ceiling ranges to keep you Buy Box-eligible without racing to the margin floor.

What is Amazon Brand Registry and do I need it?

Amazon Brand Registry is a free programme open to sellers who own a registered trademark (DPMA German trademark, EUIPO EU trademark, USPTO US trademark or equivalent). Enrolment unlocks A+ Content (rich descriptions with images, comparison tables and brand story), Amazon Stores (a free brand-owned mini-site at amazon.de/yourbrand), Sponsored Brands ads, the Vine reviewer programme, hijacker / counterfeit takedown tools and Project Zero.

For any seller building a private label on Amazon.de, Brand Registry is essentially mandatory — typical lift on A+ Content listings is 5–10% incremental conversion. File the trademark before launching the listings; hijackers move fast on attractive new ASINs.

What are Amazon.de referral fees and FBA fees in 2026?

Referral fees on Amazon.de in 2026 range from 7% (Personal Computers) to 15% (most categories) with a 45% cap on Amazon Device Accessories and a €0.30 per-item minimum. FBA fulfillment fees scale by size and weight tier: a Small Standard parcel runs ~€2.70–€3.20, a Standard Parcel ~€3.40–€4.20, and oversized items €5.50 and up.

Monthly storage costs roughly €26/m³ Jan–Sep and €36/m³ Oct–Dec (peak), with long-term storage surcharges after 271 days. Zunapro's margin calculator imports the live SP-API fee schedule and computes net margin per SKU automatically.

What is Verpackungsgesetz (LUCID) and do I need to register?

Verpackungsgesetz (VerpackG) requires every seller placing packaged goods on the German market to register in LUCID, the public packaging register operated by ZSVR (Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister), and to license packaging volumes with a dual system (Duales System Deutschland, Interseroh+, Reclay, BellandVision and others).

Amazon enforces LUCID — sellers without a valid LUCID number have their listings suppressed within days. The same applies to ElektroG (WEEE) registered with Stiftung EAR for electrical equipment, and BattG for any seller listing batteries. Zunapro's compliance pre-flight surfaces missing registrations before Amazon blocks the listing.

Can foreign (Turkish, Chinese, UK) sellers sell on Amazon.de?

Yes. Non-EU sellers must register for a German USt-IdNr., appoint a tax representative under §22f UStG, obtain a marketplace tax certificate (Bescheinigung über die steuerliche Erfassung), and provide it to Amazon via Seller Central. Many non-EU sellers also use a German fiscal address service for invoicing.

From 2026, German E-Rechnung B2B-receipt obligations apply to all sellers issuing invoices to German business customers, including non-resident ones. The fastest practical route is a German USt-IdNr. + Amazon VCS + Zunapro for E-Rechnung issuance and compliance reporting.

How long does Amazon.de Seller Central account setup take in 2026?

For a German-resident sole trader (Einzelunternehmen) with all documents ready — passport / ID, Gewerbeanmeldung, USt-IdNr., German IBAN, credit card and proof of address — Seller Central registration plus the mandatory video-call verification typically completes in 3–7 business days.

Foreign sellers usually take 2–4 weeks due to tax representative appointment, marketplace tax certificate issuance and bank-account verification. Zunapro provides an Amazon.de onboarding checklist plus pre-mapped product-data templates that cut the post-approval go-live time from weeks to days.
